Next Steps for TypePad from Six Apart
I’ve only just now gotten a chance to look at some of this stuff since TypePad/Moveable Type isn’t a platform I’m currently using. (This blog uses Wordpress; and all of my Jackson Free Press stuff uses Expression Engine.) I was just reading Huffington Post and noticed that it’s run using MoveableType, something I found surprising and impressive. So I clicked over to Six Apart and find some fun stuff, in no particular order:
1.) TypePad Platform. While I’m not even close to groking this yet, it looks like they’ve essentially opened up tha API for Typepad and made it possible to build web applications using its backend and technologies. What isn’t clear is how you get started…I assume these are options that you can build on top of your TypePad paid account.
2.) TypePad Motion. This appears to be a demonstration app that uses TypePad’s APIs to show you what’s possible…it’s a microblogging application that members can contribute to. Cute.
3.) TypePad Widgets. Obviously not brand new, but since I’ve last looked at TypePad closely (which was really during the writing of HTDE Web 2.0 Blog), they’ve added some very intriguing widgets, such as those that allow small businesses to schedule appointments or those that feed Web-based leads directly into accounting or CRM software. Some of this stuff would be very inciting if my bread-and-butter was still freelance writing.
I hope to dig a little deeper to figure out what the full implications are of TypePad’s new openness — and/or if Moveable Type is really the place to be for high-end customization. Given the dominance of WordPress and the slightly closed nature of ExpressionEngine, it certainly would be interesting to add a strong player to this field.
